Gamecocks Win First College World Series

Whit Merrifield?s RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning gave South Carolina its first baseball national championship with a 2-1 win over UCLA in the College World Series on Tuesday night, as reported by the Associated Press. The Gamecocks won six straight games after losing their opener against Oklahoma.

Edwin Jackson settled down after a wild start to throw the fourth no-hitter of the season of the pitcher, leading the Diamondbacks to a 1-0 win over the Rays on Friday night, according to an Associated Press report. Jackson walked eight, all but one in the first three innings, and threw a season-high 149 pitches in the second no-hitter in Diamondbacks? history.

With President Barack Obama watching, Washington Nationals sensation Stephen Strasburg has set a record for most strikeouts by a pitcher in his first three major league starts, according to an Associated Press report. The 21-year-old right-hander had 10 strikeouts Friday night against the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox won the the game 2-1 in the 11th inning.
